An Historic Family Cemetery

The Bowles Family Cemetery was once part of the historic African American community of "Free State." In 2014, an interpretive sign was added to this sacred site to help contextualize the history of the cemetery. The next three pages explain the social and historical significance of the graveyard and the surrounding community.

Please join CVHR and the Belevedere Neighborhood association on November 8th at 2pm for re-dedication of the cemetery.

Directions:  Bowles Cemetery is in the Belvedere Community, on the corner of Tyree Lane and Bowles Alley.  Turn onto Belvedere Boulevard off of Rio Road East (near CATEC). Drive ¾ mile to the Fairview Swim Club (on the left).  Or just set your GPS to
707 Belvedere Boulevard.  Park either on the street or in the Fairview parking lot and walk a block to the cemetery.  Volunteers will be on hand.
